Mainstream antiperspirants smell pleasant and stop us from sweating – but that’s not actually a good thing. These products can clog our pores and deliver harmful metals and other chemicals directly into the bloodstream.

DSA deodorant stones are not antiperspirants. Perspiring is the body’s way of cooling itself down, releasing toxins and waste – a natural process that shouldn’t be disrupted.

Instead, our natural mineral salt known as potassium alum works to alter the pH level of the skin’s surface, inhibiting the growth of odor-causing bacteria. DSA natural deodorants are free from aluminum chlorohydrate, parabens, propyl, talc, and other chemicals. They’re hypoallergenic, environmentally friendly, and never, ever tested on animals.

The power of salt

Potassium alum, while it sounds similar to the compounds mentioned above, is a colorless, salt, crystalline structure drawn from bauxite ore. Bauxite ore forms during the rapid weathering of granite rocks in warm, humid climates, and is purified and converted directly into alum. Large potassium alum molecules have a negative ionic charge, making them unable to pass through the cell walls – meaning they’re not absorbed into the body. Instead, alum acts on bacteria only where it causes odor: atop the surface of the skin. Potassium alum has a wide variety of applications, from medical and industrial areas to uses in food, cosmetics, and even art.

The problem with metal

Many deodorants contain aluminum-metal compounds like aluminum chlorohydrate or aluminum zirconium. Such compounds are highly-soluble and readily absorbed into the bloodstream, where the aluminum portion of the molecule ionizes to form free, radical aluminum. In turn, these metals are absorbed into liver, kidney, brain, cartilage, and bone marrow cells. While ever-developing, the medical community has researched and confirmed potential correlations between blood aluminum concentrations and Alzheimer’s disease, breast cancer, and other devastating diseases and conditions.

The wonder of agave

Meanwhile, our Ayaté line of exfoliating washcloths and body scrubbers is made from the agave plant. Known as the “tree of wonders,” agave has been cultivated for thousands of years, and is used in countless products. This all-natural cloth requires a labor-intensive process, in which the leaves are cut and cooked, pounded into fibrous strands, and softened beneath rocks for up to a week. The fibers are then scraped and washed clean of debris, soaked in a natural lime solution, and hung to dry. Once dry, they are hand woven, knitted, or crocheted into Ayaté squares. They need only be soaked in water to activate their natural, powerful exfoliation.
